The research division of global resilience seeks to address this critical question by developing multidisciplinary perspectives, drawing insights from humanities and social sciences, which can be applied to real-world challenges while paying negative aspects of resilience formulation if any.

Social Thought

Considering the current crises, including war, disasters and pandemics, this project field explores a body of literature on political and social thought both within and outside Japan to rediscover the importance of these ideas in the contemporary society and draw meaningful insights for the creation of a better future.

and Norms

International norms and institutions, which were once considered universal, have been accepted and adopted to varying degrees depending on the country or region. However, the endurability of those normative and institutional frameworks is under question in the rise of authoritarianism and exclusionism. This field aims to identify the conditions under which international norms and institutions can be maintained and developed for effective global governance.

Communication

This field views language and visual images as essential mediums for carving out pathways toward the recovery of individuals and communities. It explores the potential of language and visual communication to foster individual and community resilience and empathy among the people.

The Cross-Border Culture Research Division aims to clarify the transformations of literature and culture and examine the role of the humanities in addressing global challenges, with the goal of overcoming a divided world through humanistic knowledge.
